Open Question: why did i get taxed in jcpenney on clothes for my total of $12.68, in Ma?

i went shopping in the Natick Collections and i bought two items and the total came out to $12.68. The associate said that my total with tax would be $13.00 and some change. I worked in retail for over 5 years and i know that there isn’t tax on clothes in Ma.
